Why I am enjoying Deadhouse Gates

Although it's probably been talked about before, I would like to discuss what people liked and didn't like about this book though I am only up to the battle at Vathar Crossing so please don't spoil it for me.

Personally, I have found the desperate and cunning battles that the Chain of Dogs has faced fantastic to read. Is it true that a movie is being made based on these? Coltaine, Lull and Duiker I find to be great characters.

I also really like Icarium and Mappo - Mappo has just revealed to Icarium the content of his lost memories.

From what I can gather (browsing around while being careful not to read spoilers) people really didn't like Felisin and I can kind of see why. But wasn't the book redeemed in other areas?

I guess I should probably finish the book before discussing it, but after reading the staggering Vathar Crossing battle last night, I just have a real drive to talk about what I've read so far!

Yes finish the book first. All I can say is you are in for one explosive ending...not unusual for Erikson of ocurse.

I know what you mean. I felt like that numerous times during my first and second read through.
I'm looking forward to hearing what you think when you finish the book. I enjoyed Gardens of the Moon, but was blown away by Deadhouse Gates. And then, Memories of Ice ......... (quite possibly one of the best reads of my 45 literate years ) :)

Well I was able to piece together what was happening although you need to read MOI before understanding parallel events that occur b/w these 2 books.

I voted MOI in my top 5 fantasy reads of all time Elvet....:)

was my least fave book of the series until my third or fourth read through, now i think it may be my fave bar moi although midnight tides was excellent

i think this book gave us marvelous insights to alot of situations/people without trying just as an aside, the only quibble i have really is the details about toblakai which i still find confusing

Finally finished!

And I thought the book was gut-wrenching and amazing, particularly *SPOILER ALERT*:

- every battle the Chain of Dogs was involved in;
- the price paid to save the refugees of the Chain of Dogs;
- the fall of Coltaine and his Wickans;
- Duiker witnessing the crucifixion of 10,000 Malazans and then being nailed on the tree himself (this made me feel sick);
- in fact, the whole story of Duiker; and
- Icarium and Mappo at the edge of the Jhag Odhan after all that had happened: 'Where would I be without you?"

I like GotM, but in my humblest opinion, DHG blew it out of the water. It was brilliant!

Part of me wants to take a break before the next installment but another part is ready to sink my teeth into MoI...

Well I think I can predict with some degree of confidence that whilst DHG was a VERY spicy appetizer MOI will be what blows you out of the water big time. The best book in the series so far although most installments are excellent.

After enjoying GOTM ages ago I am only now starting to get into Deadhouse gates and just going along with the ride. I'm sure it will come together again at some point :)

I'm about half way in but can't find my book grrrr

Me too, HJ. Really neat to see the development of Karsa Orlong. Also, reading this book, having finished MoI just a couple of months ago, I finally feel like I have an idea of what is going on. Knowing in HoC what is happening elsewhere (in Pale, Darujhistan, Seven Cities, and in the Pannion Domin), is like hitting a happy little island in the middle of a tossing sea. Better still, I am getting the hint of a continental land mass on the horizon, upon which my feet will happily be one day walking (as opposed to barely keeping my head above water).

To be honest I'm dreading when the POV changes away from Karsa Orlong (I've obviously not read far into the book). It's a bizarre thing but I find myself hoping that he won't die even though he is is performing all sorts of terrible atrocities.

I know what you mean about how it feels to understand what's going on - I was really pleased with how in MoI lots of things were explained from GotM.

Karsa is awesome even though he is a butcher.

I need to go back and read HoC (I read it a while ago) as I am finishing up Midnight Tides at the moment and the two books are heavily related.

I think I read somewhere that the next book Erikson releases will be the end of the series. Is this true? I'm hesitant to find out myself in case I stumble on any spoilers...

It's the last of his Malazan Book of the Fallen arc, yes. So the cast of nigh on a thousand characters we've come to know (well, recognise the names of) won't really appear afterwards.

At the same time, Ian C. Esslemont is forging ahead with his own series (started with Night of Knives, which was followed by Return of the Crimson Guard), with Stormwielder due out at the end of this year - there's quite a bit of crossover between the two series in terms of characters and story arcs (and, obviously, the world itself). Esslemont has some of the more interesting parts of the Universe - the Crimson Guard, Korel, more in Darujhistan (following on from Erikson's Toll the Hounds), something else, and finally the so-far untouched continent of Assail.

Once he's finished, Erikson is going to release two trilogies (at a slightly slower pace than he's written MBotF) - one is going to tell the story of Anomander Rake, and the other... I've forgotten. There'll be a thread somewhere.
