Hi,
It was a paperback in the bookstores in the 1970's and early 1980's. It was about humans coming into contact with an alien confederation. On average humans are smart and the aliens are on average dumb. The lead aliens I think are lion type. The aliens at first only allow contact with the fringes of the confederation to isolate any disturbance the humans may cause. At the end humans join the confederation. Also at the end, a new race is discovered where the people are geniuses compared to humans. The head of the confederation asks the human if they should make contact the same way they made contact with the humans.

Anyone know this book?

Thanks,
booboo

I have read this (or a very similar theme) so it is presumably still in my bookshelves. I had, however, the impression it was a short story or novella, in a collection, rather than a full-length novel. However I'm not yet giving up.

It sounds like a Gordon Dickson theme, but I haven't found anything that sparked a recognition buzz.

Mostly likely you are looking for Christopher Anvil's Pandora's Planet, the original novel published back in 1973 but long out of print.

Currently available from Baen Books as a free eBook part of Pandora's Legions - it's the first half. (I'd post the link but sadly the system doesn't allow us infrequent visitors with low posts such a right...)

Another 10 posts, mwb, and you're there. Not a terribly high standard, I submit, and it does prevent the spammers from invading...

Hi,

Thanks for the effort but that is not the book. I believe the author of the book had also published several books in the 1970's. I remeber checking it out from the library and also seeing it in the bookstore.

Thanks

Really? There's another book written and published in the 1970s about humanoid lions who lead a empire and conquer earth only to find humans are actually smarter than them. And ends when the humans join the empire just as they discover a race that is proportionately smarter compared to humans as humans were to the lions - and they ask the humans help to deal with them.

I'd be remarkably surprised if that were true...

Check out the cover and reviews for Pandora's Planet by Christopher Anvil at amazon. Unless your description is incredibly off it should be the book.
