Light as performance art

Here's one.

I remember this book from around '83, barely. The story was about a girl who was learning some sort of light based performance art off a virtuoso, and their subsequent power struggle. The book was laced with scatalogical references, with the virtuoso causing the girl to defecate herself at one stage.

Sounds perverse, I know. In fact I don't even want to read it again. Just curious as to whether I remember it right and whether anyone knows what on earth it was. And I know you folks like a challenge.

*grimaces* And if it is, I wouldn't want to read it again, either. That was one seriously unpleasant book.
