Looking for a Trilogy...

Hello everyone, I am searching for a trilogy that was SF/F set on earth in the USA I think. It's about a guy whose dad made him learn all sorts of survival skills and sword fighting and stuff like that, and he never knew why. He gets back from college and finds out his dad is dead and that his uncle is really a wizard from a fantasy realm that wears glasses. Anyway he inherits these rings from his dad that open up a doorway in his base to this fantasy world where he is some kind of hero's son or royalty or something and has to fight against these elves that are all evil for whatever reason. Anyway long stories short he ends up searching for the family jewels that turn to be the means to literally creating all life after he sleeps with mother earth or someone like that. In any case it was pretty good and humorous also. No idea on the author or titles but I'm going to guess 80's decade for first publication. I hope you can help I have been raking my brain pan for years to come up with anything but failed. Thanks.

Well the first thing that comes to mind is Shadowmagic by John Lenahan which can't be it because it is too new. However, you might want to read it as it seems like you might enjoy the story - it is similar. Here's a description: Shadowmagic - A free audio book from Podiobooks.com

To me it sounds like The Varayan Memoir Series by Rick Shelley
The books are Son of the Hero, Hero of Varay, The Hero King

Published 1990 to 1992.

I dug them up and it seems to be the trilogy you are looking for. From the back of book 2:

"...if Gil were to halt such magical chaos, he would have to obtain the unobtainable-the legendary jewels of the all-powerful goddess, the Great Earth Mother."

Wow, yes that is it thank you soooooo... much K. I can't believe how bad my memory is. It has only been ten years or so but I couldn't for the life of me remember any character names or anything. I am bloody stoked to read those again thanks.
