O' Neills military background

O' Neill's military background is one of the things that has bug me while watching the show. The background says that he was a gifted airman who was assigned to a Special Forces unit (cant be the Green Berets since he was an AIRMAN first right?).

He has done numerous covert missions around the globe like in the episode Gamekeeper. But what bugs me is that while the AF does have a 'special force' such as combat controllers, combat weatherman and pararescue, I don't think they do such things like that around the globe and is more reserved/suited for Seals, Green Beret's, Delta Force and Marine Force Recon.

So my question now is where does O' Neill get his military background? It could possibly be with the CIA's elite Special Activities Division which recruits the best of the best for covert stuff and from checking it in Wikipedia, can include members from AF's special operations forces. So is that where O' Neills special forces background comes from?

I think the show has created an Air Force special forces team. There are numerous mentions of "Special Forces", despite the program being (AFAICT) singularly Air Force (except by declared diversion). Again, the fact they simply call it "Special Forces" and not one of your listed units points to new team.
