I am trying to find the title of a story or book I read many years ago.
Basic plot - There are a small number people who have a special ability. The ability is one of five types -floaters, pyrotics, hypnotics, insectivocals and precogs. An ascended being incarnates a body just after death and assumes the identity of the deceased person. He then takes action to prevent the humans doing things that would bring them to the attention of an alien race that is trying to locate the source of the ascended beings to destroy them. Other ascended beings leave false clues and fake trails to divert the aliens. Humans are the source of the ascended beings.
