Humanoid Aliens with No Title or Author

I'm looking for a book that deals mainly with an Alien race, the Lainden or something of that sort. There is a series, but I recall one of the main charater being a Captain Shanlin (?) and his cousin Vale (?). There is a theme of mind/psych control of talents, and in the last one I read they find out there is a conspiracy to destroy their family.
Anyone have a clue for me? I really can't recall the name.

There's the Liaden space opera series by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. The Wikipedia page is here. Could that be it?

I think it sounds like the Liaden books too. Specifically sounds like the characters are Shan yos'Galan and his foster brother Val Con yos'Phelium. Good books, high romance quotient though. I think there are seven, plus some assorted short stories.
