I read this series of books about 20 years ago I believe. This is a Young Adult series. There are at least 2 books, perhaps more. The basic premise being something along the lines of a future time on another planet where arena dragon fighting with heavy gambling thereon (similar to dog fighting...) is common.
In the first book, a "stable worker"/slave teen boy steals a dragon egg or dragon hatchling and then hides the it out in the desert and raises the dragon himself so he can pretend to be a real dragon owner himself and, by entering it in arena combat, earn enough money to buy his own freedom. In a significant and critical "twist" the dragon ends up being mute, a desirable trait as the dragon will be underestimated and heavily bet against making his own winnings much larger. This is a "Coming of Age" story as the boy fights for independence (and Boy meets Girl along the way, of course).
In the second book, the boy and girl ends up hiding/sleeping inside a dead dragon for some reason (ala Empire Strikes Back, i suppose?) and somehow ends up gaining pseudo-mystical powers as a result which are necessary as he flees from someone (his previous owners?).
Wow-- strange sounding story lines when written down! However, they were very good books. I read the first one at least 3 times.
All of this is "If I recall correctly" of course- I may be wrong on any number of details (but definitely not the fact the dragon ended up being mute).
Thanks in advance for any help!
Cheers,
Daniel
