I'm looking for the name of a standalone novel from the early 90's maybe that involves a cop going undercover to find a murderer in a live action role playing game that is broadcast on tv.

It's set in the future (of course) and is about a small group of 10 or so who have to get to the end of the game to win the prize. One of the contestants is a murderer and a cop goes in to find him.

At the start of the book, they are taking an underwater tour of a sunken US city, LA maybe and they are told to stay on the path. One of the group wanders off the path and is killed but the cops surmises that it wasn't a real human, just a hologram.

Also, later on in the book, the contestants who were knocked out participated on a zombie attack on the group so as not to lose all of their game points. There is also a scene where they have to burn down a building and the cop tastes the fuel to find its water (as the fire will be CG). someone comments that they will edit that out for later viewing.

I'm sorry I can't remember more and I hope my rambling doesn't confuse anyone.

Thanks,

SteelHand.

Larry Niven's Dream Park, methinks. there were 3 books in that particular series. the first used holographic tech, the other two, written later, made the tech more VR-based in light of then-current developments in VR.

not currently in print in UK if i'm right. one of my favourite books as a teenaged D&Der....

Thanks for the link, most useful. I found Dream Park on Amazon 2nd hand too so even better.
