Back in 200X there was a nice little horror film launched straight to DVD called ‘Ginger Snaps’. It had werewolves in it and it was good.
Yes, there are such things as actually good werewolf films. Not crap like ‘Cursed’ or ‘Underworld’ or that Big Bad Wolf from ‘Van Helsing’, but actually gritty, gruesome and downright scary stuff.
Also, I’m a guy that considers ‘Dog Soldiers’ to be a damn good film and that both ‘An American werewolf in…’ films were pure crap (minus one insanely scary moor scene)…so you could take my opinions with a grain of salt. I really don’t seem to caper well to the classics.

Anywho, in 2004 there were two sequels launched for that beauty of a film that was ‘Ginger Snaps’.
‘Ginger Snaps: Unleashed’ is the sequel (the other one’s actually a prequel) and is a really really good film. Sure, it could use some polish around the edges, could have used more of some characters, could have gone a bit more off the wall with the gore and the insanity at some point but…Hell if I ever expected it to be this good.

And the reason why it’s so good issss….
IT’S NOT ABOUT THE WOLF!
They got it right in the first film, and Woooopie!, they got it right the second time around too. It’s a werewolf film where the wolf is not in the freaking spotlight for the whole film.
Yes, she’s transforming.
She’s fighting it.
He’s coming.
He wants to mate.
He’s out there.
But you don’t know WHERE. Or, for that matter, even how he looks like.
This film is about a scared girl that’s trying not to become a huge monster that’s going to be eating people for the rest of her life.
And it’s about a really big animal hunting its prey and dragging them into the shadows.
It’s absolutely everything a werewolf flick should be about. No fancy CGI, no fancy effects, no fancy gore…just a good story, good characters to help the story along and really nice way to top everything off.

If you’ve missed it back in 2004, go buy it on DVD and watch it if you’re a horror fan. Get the first film as well. This is not your garden variety of remakes and rehashes of ancient ideas. This is your pure breed of werewolf goodness, with a great story, great characters for most of the time and a truly great way of ending it all.
Forget wolfmen and how they’re trying to bastardize the myth in every piece of crap they’re throwing our way since 1980…this is HOW YOU DO IT! Accept no substitutes.
