Dan O'Bannon passed away on December 17. O'Bannon was one of the SF greats of the silver screen. As a screen writer his credits include:
Dark Star (1974)
Alien (1979)
Blue Thunder (1983)
Total Recall (1990)
Screamers (1995)
Alien vs Predator (2004)
and was special effects supervisor for Dark Star and did computer animation for none other than Star Wars.
Thanks Dan.

He also did an adaptation of Lovecraft's The Case of Charles Dexter Ward called The Resurrected (1992). A flawed film -- sometimes quite badly -- but nonetheless a conscientious attempt to be fairly faithful to the story while still having a modern sensibility. In some ways, it is one of the most intelligent adaptations of Lovecraft to date, and in fact from what I understand, a great deal of the problems with it came from studio higher-ups doing a re-edit on the film which results in some logical flaws and continuity problems and a generally more choppy and rather more flat feel to some sections of the film. There was a push for a "director's cut" of this one, but it looks as if now this is something we'll never see....

He deserves his place among the best, not least for Dark Star, one of the all-time great films, IMHO..

RIP, Dan...

Dark Star

Bombed-out in space with a spaced-out bomb!

One of the SF 'classics'

Rest easy...
