I am sci fi and fantasy fan. I like to chat with o
Do you like Cook Glen's Black Company books?

These books are my best fantasy books i've ever read. I enjoyed these books so much i was problem to stop reading.

These dark fantasy books are different. There are no heroes in shining armor in these books but simple mercenaries, tons of undead and funny wizards.

Welcome. I'm another Black Company fan. (Though I also like knights in shining armor sometines). :)

Do you mean Malazan Empire?
I'm not NJ but I can pretty much 100% guarantee that is what is being referred to here.

I've got almost all of Cook's works and of course have Erikson's Malazan series, the best EPIC fantasy series I've ever read. Needless to say Cook is a huge influence on Erikson....

Also try Paul Kearney, an underrated writer of military style fantasy but well worth a look.

Cheers....:)

Thank you guys!!! I just bought the first one Malazan book:) to have some pleasure during Chrismas time.

What about Books of South? I have read the first one year ago, i am still waiting for the second one. Does some other books exist? I guess i am waiting for translation into my language...

This Black Company continue is not as good as original series was but it is still amazing for me.

Btw.... Merry Christmas!

I just looked for Glen Cook in my county library catalogue and there is a grand total of one, number 10 in the Garret PI series, "Angry Lead Skies".

Worth trying?
If yes, will reading number 10 give away the plots of numbers 1 to 9 or are they pretty much standalone?

Well....like any character who is developed over a period of years, reading the previous books is going to add additional layers of texture and a greater understanding of their evimronment, psychology etc. BUT in this instance you are OK reading Book 10 and backtracking later as the Garrett P.I books are essentially stand-alones.

And Yes....defintely worth checking out...:)

Well as you say, definitely TOR have recently released omnibus edns. of the Black Company series but in English.

I'm not sure what your native language is?

Please also note Cook is planning, I think, another 2 Black Company novels in the future.

Tor softcover releases:

The Chronicles of The Black Company (collects The Black Company, Shadows Linger, and The White Rose) (November 2007)

The Books of the South (collects Shadow Games, Dreams of Steel, and The Silver Spike) (June 2008)

The Return of The Black Company (collects Bleak Seasons, and She Is The Darkness) (September 2009)

The Many Deaths of The Black Company (collects Water Sleeps, and Soldiers Live) (January 2010)

P.S. As you say, the original 2- 3 books are probably still the best BUT it is a series that is worth reading as overall it is still better IMO, than a lot of other contemporary writing found in SFF.

On Malazan, don't worry too much if it's hard to make sense of Book 1 until late into the book, most people need to get to Book 3 (Memories Of Ice and arguably still the best book of the series so far... ) to get a good understanding of what is going on. As I often say, the best EPIC fantasy series I've read with world building second only to Mr. Tolkien in breadth and scope.

Night....:)

A few weeks ago I bought the Black Company after reading this thread. Took me a while to get into it, but really liked it. Just got the second one, not started reading yet (got 3 other books to read first).

Hello Gollum,

thank you very much for your answer.

My native language is Czech.

I am really very thankful for your info because i see i will get chance to buy many excellent books in future:)

Shadow Games is latest book about Black Company available in our stores so i see a shining future:), as i said i am waiting for second book around year, so i will switch to Malazan. If the translated books about BC will not be available i will have to visit Amazon to try english version.

Well I have no news on the publications in Czech but as you say, you can always buy the English versions. These omnibus version are in paperback....so they are approx $20 US (25-30 Australian Dollars).... so not too bad.

OH...and sorry to spoil the magic but there was at least one other Black Company thread here a couple of weeks back.

you may also wish to visit the Erikson forum here once you start reading Malazan.

Thank you very much for your support and patience. I see prices are same here.
Btw good book is lifetime investment:) so if i am willing to pay same price for movie in cinema i am willing to pay even more for a good book.

I am just sorry this time of stress and hurry is not reading friendly. I was a real book freak during 80s.

Have a nice day.

Whoops, I could've sworn there was a thread on the Black Company... assumed this was it :p

[There, now my cover is completely restored].

:)

Np. [Mwahaha, my cover is now restored. Now for some stellar engineering...]

No Problem, glad you enjoyed his work, alot of people struggle with Gardens of the Moon as it jumps around alot but once you get into it its well worth it. Book 2 is awesome and Book 3 will blow you away.

Enjoy!
