Cook Glen - Black Company

Hello Gollum,

thank you very much for your answer.

My native language is Czech.

I am really very thankful for your info because i see i will get chance to buy many excellent books in future:)
Are you aware that this year's European SFF convention is being jointly held by Czech, Slovak and Polish groups bringing together three conventions: Eurocon, Parcon and Polcon into what will be called Tricon 2010? I mention this because Steven Erikson is the first foreign guest who has confirmed he will be attending. The event takes place at the end of August 2010. Adrzej Sapkowski, whom you may be familiar with, will also be attending.

Here are some links...http://tricon.info/?page_id=19 http://tricon.info/?page_id=43

In Czech:) i had problem with unavailability of Black company new books. We have many books of Erikson in our stores i noticed later. I just missed it till NJ1 gave me the tip:)

My cover is this: - with alone tower.

Of course i know Sapkowski. You too? He is a Polish author but his popularity is huge here. I have read his saga 2x during time of university study. I even took a car to visit his movie in Krakow, Poland (movie was not available in our cinemas) but it was disgusting crash of an excellent roman saga (Witcher - Wiedzmin).

Wiedzmin (2001)

Yes I know Sapkowski, the first 2 books are out in English. I know quite a few European including former East European writers both SFF and in the wider "literary" field translated into English.

In fact I'm about to start reading a recent translation of the collected stories of Tatyana Tolstaya, a direct descendant of Leo Tolstoy and one who specialises in fairy tales with twisted endings.

I should probably mention that I'm of Swiss background (via my parents) and speak German as a second language, having lived in Switzerland for short period of time, although I'm Australian born.

So what about Tricon 2010?

Lol about the Tricon. I never visited any con in my life. I am just an silent sci fi and fantasy freak. Yearly con in Chotebor is 40kms from my town and i never visited even this one.

Gollum, your nationality is really very rich and interesting. I am sure this is giving you an advantage to have a good point of view in your life. BUT.

One correction: People from USA/UK usually define Czech as eastern country. This is a huge and a weird mistake. 1500 years of our history is connected to France, Germany, Austria. Our kings even owned cities in Italy. They were also those who had a priviledge to vote for Emperors of Holly Roman Empire.

Vault castle of Holly Roman Empire is located in Czech:

Yes, we fallen to Russian sphere after 2WW but it was only for 45 years...

Russian culture is different for us as Turkish is.

You are lucky guy because Czechs are so patient people but if you blame Poles they are eastern europeans similar to Russians, they will immediately draw theirs swords )) as i know them...

Concerning Russian Authors: i have read a Russian sci fi book: Andromeda Nebula in my childhood. It was alien like book and i was scared of that for a next few years. I also saw a Russian fantasy movie:Wolfhound.

Hope this info helps....

Yes well I was aware of that tendency for people to say that, having a European background myself but that is often how countries that had fallen under the Russian sphere as you put it are viewed and I did say "former" for a reason. I'm also including anthologies of writers I have that published whilst under Russian "rule" and hence is referred to as East European literature. I have a Polish friend and am therefore familiar with the history of Poland and several other countries including yours in that region....:)

On Tricon 2010, perhaps you should get out more?....:D The Cons can be a really good way of meeting with authors and fans and gaining a better understanding of the Genre.

BTW I'm not from the USA/UK but Australia, so we tend to be more worldly over here... ;)

I am sorry, it was not my aim to offend you in any way. I just lost my temper a little.. I am just a little tired to explain again and again Czechia is not Cecnya etc... This is wrong place for such debate and it cannot be solved in few sentences.

The best way to get more info is to come on Con mentioned above. Con city is not Czech it is Silesian (i guess) but you can take a short trip around maybe. If you like fantasy you notice we have castle on every second hill:) Many of these castles look really fantastic. I can see two of them from my town.

No offense taken Jardax.

Let us know how you find the next installment of Erikson's series and when you get hold of the next Black Company edn.

EDIT: I love castles and visited several when I was in Germany.

I got the second and third book:) today. I waited a little for a reprint but i was lucky, new release came a few days after my order:).
You mean omnibus edn. or single novels in the series??

I picked up the final omnibus no. 4 last week.

I'm going to have to go through all 4 omnibus edns. now.

I mean House of Dead - The second book. It was out of stock so i waited for a new print. There was a problem with a few other books, i guess it was caused by high demand:) If i like the second and third book as the first one, i will have to buy next 4 at once i guess to prevent a situation i will not be able to buy it anymore.

Btw it seems you live in this forum!

Well, I can assure you there are plenty who are here more frequently than me; a guy who likes wearing Texan hats and another who thinks he's an octopus to name but two...;)

Mind you, owning the basement here does help some.

Now, House of Dead? You've lost me there I'm afraid. You mean Cook or Erikson or Esselmont (Erikson's co-collaborator? )... Unless this is a translation into your native language?

EDIT: AHH....maybe there's something to that. Book 2 being Deadhouse Gates (English) for Erikson's Malazan series.

You've signed off, but when you return I realise now where the confusion/misunderstanding came in. I was referring to Cook's 4 omnibus edns comprising the Black Company series and you I'm guessing, Erikson's Malazan epic.

Well he's supposed to be writing 2 more Company novels A Pitiless Rain and Port Of Shadows.

He's reported to be currently working on the final Instrumentalities book, WORKING THE GODS’ MISCHIEF, another P.I. Garrett novel, GILDEN LATTEN LOVE(RS), a new Dread Empire novel, A PATH TO COLDNESS OF HEART and the Black Company novel PORT OF SHADOWS.

Just finished the second Black Company book. Won't spoil anything, but I thought it was excellent. I'll be buying the third once I've worked my way through my to-read pile.
