Captain Sir Jean-Luc Picard...

Great news. Patrick Stewart is a great actor and very deserving of this IMO.

Having been the centre of authority on the Enterprise for many years, he'll certainly be able to carry the title with dignity.

(And can I just add that I think he has a beautiful voice.)

And I was all lined up to make a thread titled "A Starry Knight"... shame I'm a couple of hours late. :( Great news for him - he's a brilliant actor, and well deserves it.

I can still post this rather amusing video which one of the tech sites I visit used to announce his knighthood:

You can imagine the scene in Buckingham Palace. Her Majesty, a little-known (ahem!) closet ST:TNG fan is presented with the list of honours, for final approval.

Clerk: Your Majesty, the list for the 2010 New Year's Honours

QEII: Is there anyone interesting on the list?

Clerk: The usual. That actor, Patrick Stewart, is up for an OBE.

QEII: Only an "O"? Nothing higher?

Clerk: We could make it a knighthood.

QEII: Make it so!

Let's not forget that he was Gurney Halleck in Lynch's Dune. I've heard a rumor that Lynch wanted him to carry an aardvark into a battle scene where, IIRC, after refusing and arguing with Lynch, he wound up carrying a pug dog.

Three cheers for artistic integrity!!!

I was never a trekky (strange, given my surname) but let us also not forget that he was in Excaliber and very good in that film he was too. He also made the new comeover (#1 all over) fashionable - no more hair blowing at weird angles in the wind.

As for getting an OBE; it couldn't happen to a nicer man.

Yes, a knighthood on top of the OBE (Order of the Bonce, Exposed) is fitting.

This puts me in mind of Pride and Prejudice, sir.

"You judge very properly," said Mr Bennet; "and it is happy for you that you possess the talent of punning with delicacy. May I ask whether these pleasing punnes proceed from the impulse of the moment, or are they the result of previous study?"

Neither, actually, in this case.

I've only really noticed the true pun this very minute. What I thought I was doing was simply providing a vaguely appropriate expansion of the letters OBE. The hood bit was entirely unintentional, at least consciously.

So three cheers for my subconscious, which was really on the ball with this one. (To be fair, it comes up with a lot of the puns, saving me the bother of having to work them out for "myself". :))
