This story was in a green hardback book, large-ish typeface from what I can remember, and the last time I read it would have been around 1969 ish.
A young man (18?) aspires to be a chemist, is travelling on a commercial ship to another planet that has been colonised, a new FTL drive has been developed, but all the experimental craft have been lost. It appears that the crews die as a result of accelerated aging caused by traveling FTL. The lad discovers the chemical compound that prevents the rapid aging and saves the day.
There's a lot of detail missing (where, how why etc) - memory is patchy!
