Can't say I'm surprised given the director/studio clashes over the third movie and there's been rumours for months that the studio weren't happy over Raimi's preference choice of John Malkovich as the Vulture as the spidey foe for IV.

It could have been an interesting take but maybe not as "popcorn" as the money-men were thinking. More worrying is the decision to entirely reboot the franchise so that we have to sit through another telling of the Spider-Man origin.

Why can't they do a shortcut like Superman Returns did and just say "Yeah, we know these are different actors but the story is set after Spider-man 3" and leave it at that.

Having said all of that, is it just me or has the Spider-man comic stories been going downhill for years anyway? Clone saga? Please. What a load of tosh.

I think they should go with the Homer Simpson reboot... "Spider-Pig".

Beyond that I suppose they could have gone dark and deep (Batman). I did think Spidey 3 was a little bit dreadful. Risky though dumping Maguire I suspect for a lot of people he is Spiderman.

Spiderman has suffered from the (90's) Batman problem. Having too many villians in each film in an attempt to make each film more exciting than the last. There was no need to include Venom, Sandman and HobGoblin (I think, green goblin's son) in Spiderman 3.

Moonbat,
Harry was the second Green Goblin, not Hobgoblin; who in the comics was played by Jason Macendale, a mercenary who was hired by Norman Osborn and given the Goblin formula, spare glider and costume, to kill Spider-man and then went solo (and later became possessed by a demon by that's another story).

Hmm. According to wikipedia that's not entirely correct, but that how I remembered it so either wikipedia's wrong or my memory is.

I agree with Winters Sorrow.

Go for a different actor to Toby; don't get me wrong, I thought he did well in the role, but I also remember Spidey being a lot more 'mouthy' (or cocky), taunting his foes with one liners (the way Ryan Reynolds did in Blade Trinity).

If played right I think it could work. However, I thought the Vulture was a bit lame. I guess I just don't see the franchise going forever and Spidey 4 maybe being the last outing for a while.

How about the Venom symbiote doing it's Carnage thing. Along with the Carnage main storyline you could have a Doc Connors/Lizard storyline where Kraven the Hunter shows up to hunt the Doc/Lizard.

Well, just an idea.

I've enjoyed the Spiderman films so far and i really like Tobey Maguire so i'll be sorry to see him go, but I was sorry to see Michael Keaton's Batman go and i really enjoyed Christian Bale's Batman. (Let's not talk about George Clooney and Val Kilmar's efforts. :( )

I dare say that this'll be the end of Spiderman films, but i'll bet good money that this marks a downturn in th equality of the stories. It'll be a while before we see a decent Spiderman again.

I can think of a few that they won't be considering: Keanu Reeves, John Rhys-Davies and Brian Blessed, for a start...:D

I've only seen the first one, which I enjoyed, but the second one looked too silly even for me!

The second film is actually the best in the series. It goes for comic book shenanigans and it stays there, without ever trying to be more than what it was. I remember the train scene in that one and I can say it's one of the best in superhero movies to date. It may be unrealistic, but we're watching a guy that crawls on walls and swings on "webs" fighting a bad guy that has 4 metallic tentacles stuck to his back...I think it deserved some slack on that one.

I've given up on Spider-Man once the "One more day" storyline concluded and I'm not that keen to get back into it anytime soon...though I just may. Curiosity has always been a sore spot for me hehe.

But otherwise...an Ultimate Spider-Man adaptation may not be so horrible in the long run. The comics had some very nice storylines that could be excised into a movie. And it may be just me, but I found the Ultimate comics featuring a much less whiny Peter Parker than the Amazing/Peter Parker/Spectacular/whatever others there are with Spidey.

I enjoyed all 3 Spidey films, but did enjoy 2 a little better (I think the fight scenes and Parker getting MJ was a big factor in making it a favourite).

I heard Toby is now looking to lose a few pounds and inches (steady ladies) to become a certain Mr Bilbo Baggins in the upcoming The Hobbit film.:)

Worry not Winters_Sorrow for Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro rushed out a statement to 'Aint it Cool News' to stop the rumours continuing. They stated that auditions are continuing and announcements for the part aren't due for a couple of months.

Although, can he be any more of a wet blanket than Mr Wood was as Frodo!
