So I'm looking for a short story that I read when I was at school (late '80s, early '90s). I can only dimly recall the details, but I think it starts with the protagonist being woken in his cell, because he is some sort of a sentry, and his job is to hunt down rogue individuals within some sort of hive/network. Once he's done that he returns to his cell and returns to some sort of sleep/stasis.
The next time he wakes up he waits for instructions from the hive mind/central computer, but none come: due to a failing in the system he has woken early, which means - gasp! - that he is now a rogue agent.
That's just about all I can remember. It was in some sort of sci-fi compilation - probably aimed at kids or teenagers.
Anybody got any ideas?
