I thought it was about time to start this thread, as Ms. Wurts has been so kind on her own site (Trystane's Website: host for the Janny Wurts Offical Webpage and the Don Maitz Official Webpage) to keep us readers updated on her progress.

A word of warning, Janny Wurst DOES NOT, EVER, give release dates to her readers or anyone else (yes, that includes you, Amazon, as you continue to post release dates for novels that are not even finished), until her final draft has been submitted to her publisher (Harper Collins UK). She has been very clear on this point, and a certain other epic fantasy author would do well to follow suit, or at least to tell his publisher to stop guessing.

This, of course, does not prevent us from speculating until the cows come home as to when Initiate's Trial will be in our hot little hands.

The latest word from directly from Janny is that she is working on the penultimate (that means "next-to-last", Grimward) chapter set in the novel, so the end of the first draft is in sight, but there is absolutely no word on a release date (quite properly). For those who don't know, the way she structures her chapters are in sets, with one main, longer chapter, and two successively shorter chapters, that usually take place at the same time. Then there are three short paragraphs, little snapshots if you will, at the end of the set that lets you know what is happening elsewhere as a lead up to the next chapter set. She is working on the 13th chapter set (so 36 chapters proper have been done).

After Stormed Fortress, I just know that this is gonna be good.

Re: iNITIATE'S TRIAL: Updates on Release

Glad to hear Janny is almost finished the next book, been really looking forward to it. It is amazing how Amazon can keep posting incorrect release dates for books not even finished yet.

Nice to see you on the boards, Dek. Busy with the little one, no doubt.

Yes, I am looking forward to a summer re-read for the series, prepping for IT.

UPDATE

(Because Clanny's been too busy with spiders recently:D)

Chapter 13 is done, Chapter 14 is underway.

Re: iNITIATE'S TRIAL: Updates on Release

The latest word from directly from Janny is that she is working on the penultimate (that means "next-to-last", Grimward) chapter set in the novel....

And here all along I thought it meant "Of or relating to a penult":D

Silly me.

Yes, little rob doesn't leave much time to go online lately. He has just discovered the joys of standing up unassisted, will be walking in no time.

Will need to embark on a read read myself again before IT is released, now that Janny has almost finished writing (a couple of chapters shouldn't take her too long).
Should have plenty of time to read though the series to date while the whole publishing process happens.

Ha!

For such a re-read (if you're talking series, you're talking thousands of pages) to happen, now that you are a parent, Ms. Dekket will have to seriously monopolize the provision of Rob entertainments during the waking hours. Otherwise....well, there's no help for it. And when you finally get the child to sleep, thinking to get a few good chapters in yourself before bed...whammo; you're out cold, having read two lousy paragraphs, and stained the pages in the process by drooling on them.

It's all there in the fine print on the child agreement you signed....;)

Just kidding, of course. Good to hear from you again, glad to hear Dek Jr. is doing fine, and hope he doesn't skin too many knees during navigational experimentation.....

I must echo my friend Grimward's comments. Unless you are one of those happy people who can exist on 4 hours sleep each night, a re-read by the fall is a dream of idleness in a world of activity...

And Janny is finished with the draft!

*Breaks out the celebratory beverages for the Wurtsian Faithful*

Now comes the editing....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Must head over to the Chrons Bar, and have a Hobgoblin Ale.

YIPPPPPEEEEEEEE!

Now, Grim, wouldn't you just love to be the editor of that tome???

You know it, Clanny.

Actually, I'd settle for being a test reader; editing's too much work!:D

I thought this a good place for my 1400th (counted) post, as it was long past due for a tickle.

Grim, if you ask nice, maybe she'll let you?

To update this thread, btw, Ms. Wurts is in the painstaking process of the fine edits and paring the wordage (is that a word?) down a bit, and is in the latter half of the book. Her last update in mid-November indicated that she was working on the 10th chapter set (10 of 14), so about 2/3 of the way through on the final edits.

My Christmas present? A submitted final draft in January! Possible, just possible. I'll take February as a back up.

Yup! Wordage - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary

I found the first book (Curse of the Mistwraith) the other day at a used bookstore and can't wait to start!

Enjoy, but allow yourself the luxury to read slowly, if you need to. There is a lot happening, even when it does not appear to be so. Every word you read will be important later on, so look for nuance. You will want to re-read this book later if you take a liking to this series, as it lays the groundwork for the next ten volumes.

Oh, and fasten your seat belt when you get to Ithamon, because after that it is a very fast and bumpy ride (and that's all I have to say 'bout that).

Good morning :D

It's been a while since I visited.

Hope everything is good Mr Clanny :D

Just wondered if there is anymore news on the release date?

She has finished the final editing of chapter set 12, as of last week. Two chapter sets (a chapter set is one big chapter, followed by two smaller sub-chapters, followed by a triplet of paragraphs on one page at the end of the chapter set) left to polish, and the manuscript goes to the publisher. When it goes to the publisher, then we will get a publication date, likely in the fall of 2011. She said (just in the last couple of days) on her website that with Christmas and getting her taxes done (she and her husband bite the bullet and do them in January each year) the editing has slowed a bit, but she's been working on the final polish for several months. It won't be too much longer now. Usually 6-9 months once the draft is turned in.

Just today she mentioned that she has 139 pages to go through with the final edits (going at a rate of about 30 pages a day).
