is there anything that GRRM can do in DWD that would make you not want to continue...

reading the series? When I look back, a lot of my favorite characters are killed off, and it's pretty safe to say that nobody's safe. What's gonna happen if he kills off Dany? What about Tyrion and Jon Snow? I mean people have speculated about these grandiose plots involving these characters until the end, but what if GRRM is thinking the complete opposite?

Would the death of any character/characters stop you form continuing reading?

death no, bad writing yes, but only if the book after ADWD is also badly written.

Re: is there anything that GRRM can do in DWD that would make you not want to continu

In no particular order;
1. Tyrion finds religion.
2. Jon Snow gets jiggy with a wight Ygritte or, even worse, Dead Catelyn having discovered an Oedipal itch he didn't know he had.
3. Gregor and Loras form a civil partnership after years of denying their love.
4. Hodor admits he's faking the whole disabled thing and is really Benjen Stark in disguise, and is part of an elaborate plot devised by Eddard in the event of his betrayal and death.
5. Arya spends the entire book walking into things because she's blind.

....but nah, I'd read this series to the end regardless of how ADwD turns out quite frankly. Even if he pegged it ala Jordan and Parris had to get one of his buddies from the Wildcards circle to finish it for him.

I will read it regardless, but I have a large capacity for liking writing of all levels! Maybe though...

1. Tyrion "finds religion" with Loras
2. Cersei protects the N'avi from the Boltons. Everyone becomes nice.
3. The Boltons kill all the other main characters and join an alliance with the Others, renaming Westeros, "The Chill". Winter is permanent. The End.

Re: is there anything that GRRM can do in DWD................

There is no one that GRRM could kill that would make me stop reading the series. For me at least, part of what has made this such a great read has been the unexpected deaths of major characters. I don't want boilerplate, I want to be shocked, thrilled, surprised, blown away, etc. Certain characters are probably untouchable, but it doesn't matter. As kiwi said, only bad writing would make me stop reading this wonderful series, and to be honest, that's kind of like saying someone is going to wave a wand and turn Scarlett Johansson into Maggy the Frog. GRRm is a great writer, and great writers don't write bad books, at least not when they are total perfectionists. Even AFFC, which is universally considered to be the "worst" of the series still blows most other writing away.

The answer for me is no, not really. Even if it wasn't up to par, it would be the same as me supporting the same hockey team for my entire life despite the drought of the past 15 years. On the upside, the football team I have supported as early as I can remember will finally win a Superbowl on Sunday.

Do you live in New Orleans or just a fan?

It would be really nice to see them win, nice for the team and nice for the city.

I need to make a correction. If Tyrion finds true love with Loras or any other character; I will be happy for him and I will defend his right to marry (or not) the person of his choice. And I will reread the Darkover series.

Re: is there anything that GRRM can do in DWD that would make you not want to continu

TK lives in Canada (hence the reference to hockey teams). Toronto Maple Leaf fans have been waiting since 1967 for a Stanley Cup. They sell out every game, and keep putting crappy teams on the ice. Talk about rewarding crappiness.

If Ned was brought back to life, that would be it for me.

Lol Darkover...I liked some of those...

Just a fan of the Saints. Yesterday's game was every bit the thriller I hoped it would be. Finally!!!

I was referring to a certain hockey team that makes me cry red, blue and white when they loose, which is often. Could be worse, I could be Leafs fan like Clansman.

Sorry for the detraction folks, but thought the sports analogy would work.

Re: is there anything that GRRM can do in DWD that would make you not want to continu

I'm with KiwiBird on this: only if the writing quality nose-dived in ADWD would I not want to continue with TWOW. (And even then, I might be tempted to take a look at a copy from the library, just in case the nose-dive was a one-off.)

But I have no expectations at all that the quality of the writing will decline, so all I need are the books to read; as The Imp has said, GRRM's writing more than the equal of that of most of his contemporaries even on an off day.

BITE YOUR TONGUE, FOUL HARPIE!!!! I was a fan of a certain red, blue and white team (27 time winners of the Stanley Cup that they are), but in 1993 a new team hit the ice (quite literally in those days): The Ottawa Senators.:)

I will never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never ....

ever be a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Ever.

Now that that is cleared up, if Bran got use of his legs back and took revenge on Jaime, killing him in a sword fight at the age of 14 (a few years from now in the story) six months after taking up the sword, that is another thing that would turn me off this series.

I'd keep reading it though.

HA!!!!!!!! MY VERY BAD, Clansman. I misinterpreted your last post. Please accept this apology from this humble but foul harpie.

Turning to the series, I actually would like to see Bran getting a sort of revenge on Jaime. Although, some may say that, in a way, Jaime's road to perdition is punishment enough, or is it Jaime's humanity finally getting the upper edge.

Re: is there anything that GRRM can do in DWD that would make you not want to continu

I don't know.

You can't have a perfectly good, almost non verbal, humanoid, like Hodor, and a warg meister like Bran and not have them do something significant together, like, say, kill Cersei. (little brother requirement then also fulfilled).:)

Viva Les Habs.

Re: is there anything that GRRM can do in DWD that would make you not want to continu

I think GRRM deciding to co-write with Stephanie Meyer would definitely turn me off reading any further, other than that I am too far into the story to not want to see it to the end regardless of if writing quality slips or strange plot developments.

Re: is there anything that GRRM can do in DWD that would make you not want to continu

Ahem. Vive Les Habs. It is Montreal, not Naples.

And Go Sens Go!

And...after the collaboration with Ms. Meyer starts:

How about Dany having a vivid dream, where her real true love (not Drago), standing upon a great wall of ice and bearing a black mantle, a commander of men in the face of impossible odds, awaits her in her rightful kingdom. She loads up all the armies and goes, thus resolving the Mereenese knot, and discovers that her true love, John Snow, is also heir to the Lord of the Vampires (his real father).

I'd probably keep reading, though.

Re: is there anything that GRRM can do in DWD that would make you not want to continu

For me it'd be a super-happy ending, but we all know that isn't going to happen. With that said, and given the level of 'reality' in ASOIAF, I actually wouldn't mind if some good things happened - good things being in short supply up until now.

Of course, there was a point, early on, when I said to a friend of mine, "If Arya dies, I'll stop reading," but that was only half a threat and, as Imp and Kiwi and others have pointed out, only bad writing could really ruin this series (not bloody likely).

Re: is there anything that GRRM can do in DWD that would make you not want to continu

Clansman, je suis desolee! Vive Les Habs! I'm bad at spelling in any language. Haven't had many opportunities to speak French in years.

This series could be half as good as A Feast for Crows and still be twice as good as most fantasy series. I still wouldn't mind seeing GRRM's out takes. It would be enlightening.
