This is something I always wanted to ask to fellow sci-fi writers. Do you listen to music while writing? I think it can be an incredibly fertile source of inspiration, if well-chosen.

Ouch. There is another thread on this in the Music section (my mistake).
May someone in the staff remove this one?

Actually, there are at least two other threads I remember in "aspiring writers: http://www.sffchronicles.co.uk/forum/525834-do-you-listen-to-music-when-you-write.html
and
http://www.sffchronicles.co.uk/forum/48006-what-kind-of-music-if-any-do-you.html

This is a perennial interest. Personally, I don't tend toward external distractions (if you'd ever seen me scribbling away on a bus you'd realise that mere external sound is not going to break through my concentration, but I have occasionally been forced to compose it for songs occurring during the story; does that count?

I'm still listening to the soundtrack from 'Caprica' during the day when I'm at home - at nights I prefer silence.

I write the first draft with music playing, and need it for inspiration, but after that, I work on the editing in silence.

I stick music on to try and drown out potential distractions. I find myself ignoring it after a while, so I've got no idea if it's feeding through my subconscious. I haven't, touch wood, typed out all of Florence and the Machine's songs yet, but there's always the risk! :D

(Currently listening to: Alabama 3 - Exile on Coldharbour Lane)

i'm a big fan of listening to japanese folk music, medieval flute music, fantasy soundtracks (especially from the elder scrolls games). Anything that has an enchanting vibe

I put it on before I start, and sometimes the songs can get me in the right mood, but once I'm on a roll I can't even hear it. I'll often get through a band's entire back catalogue and only notice that it's stopped itself when I surface to go for some toast.

To write to, Yes - Rick Wakeman - Tangerine Dream, especially Rubicon. In the real world, I like R&B, 70's Funk, like the Barkeys and Funcadelick, also Jamessssssss Brownnnnn, dadada da da.
