Human girl raised by dragons

A friend is trying to remember the name of a book that went roughly as follows:

It was the first book in a series, and I believe the authors wrote under a pen name. The book was a novel about a human girl who ends up being fostered by dragons, away from her own kind. She's eventually removed from her dragon family, I believe because her "brother" is missing and she sets out to find him. Conflict eventually ensues, yadda, yadda, but I can remember very little else.

I -think- it was written by two women, one of whom is now deceased, which at the time put the series in limbo. That, though, is all I can recall.


Does anybody here have any clues that might help us track down this book?

Plot doesn't ring any bells, but two women writing about dragons suggests Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman

Though having been to Fantastic Fiction, I just learnt Tracy Hickman is a guy.
They are also both still alive according to Fant Fict.

…and Mercedes Lackey, which would fit all the authorship and series requirements, except the pen name.

sigh, not in for a week, and one I could have answered. well, the second book was Elvenblood, which was okay, but not as good as Elvenbane, then the third Elvenborn which I have heard nothing good at all about. still want to check it out since I have the first two.
