I picked up a signed Easton Press edition of this Guy Gavriel Kay book today for a song. It was so cheap I couldn't resist it; I thought it would make excellent trade fodder for some science fiction when I got to another bookstore. But two people remarked to me how good it was as I held it in line. Is this monster worth the time?

The short answer is "Yes", Omphalos - IMHO, one of the best ever fantasy novels, and deserves the title of classic....

And 680+ pages isn't that much of a monster, especially as that's the whole thing: no Volumes II and III, no sequels or prequels...:)

Other than the Lord of the Rings, this is the only fantasy novel that i've ever tried to read. I didn't finish it because i don't like fantasy, but it was a well written book.

I can only really add my endorsements to the above comments. Kay is a very talented writer, whose majority of fiction I have derived a lot of pleasure from over the years.

I look forward to reading your review on it.

I thought it was excellent as well, one of the best stand-alone fantasy novels I've read.
