I think my favourite book of last year (2009) across all genres was 'Gone' by Michael Grant. The pace, the vision and the bizarre nature of the story really caught my imagination. I couldn't wait for the paperback of the sequel, 'Hunger', and having bought it in hardback last week, I devoured it in two days.
Although the second book did not add many new ideas, the story was just as well written, just as gripping and has left me looking forwards to the next instalment. I didn't feel the ending of Hunger was quite as well done as the previous book - it felt a bit rushed at the end, but it was still far better than your average YA book.
This series is not one for the squeamish and is not suitable for under 12s. There is a lot of violence, some of which is disturbing in both description and sense of reality.
