Was watching a dogfight in the Clone Wars the other day, and it made me wonder why kamikaze strategies are not being used.

Ships seem to be able to travel extremely fast (faster than light?) with their hyperdrives, so any impact would be with a tremendous amount of force. Why not just launch missiles with hyperdrives or put in R2 units for kamikaze missions instead of using those small fighters and blasting each other with laser cannons?

Could be several reasons. Plot is one that immediately comes to mind. I suppose that shields would also be a factor. I'd imagine that if a ship where to enter hyperspace then it wouldn't exist in realspace and would be useless in any combat or Kamikaze run.

I don't think "Total War" was in the thinking of George Lucas when he dreamed up Star Wars. It's entertainment, not anything more cerebral than that. You may as well ask why a space station the size of a small moon was destroyed by what looked to be no more than 20 fighters...

Although if you want to be pernicky about this, I suppose the "Interdictor-class" ships the Empire has in the novels, could easily act as outer support vessels for the capital ships to stop this happening as they collapse the hyperdrive engines of incoming ships (or missiles) to my understanding.

Just found this site:Hyperspace - Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki

Wasn't sure how they explained the phenomena of hyperspace in the Star Wars universe. Didn't know they were supposed to be travelling in another dimension.

Well, the main point of the post isn't to poke holes in Star Wars, but rather to see if there are some interesting strategies that might work well in the Star Wars universe. They seem to have some interesting capabilities, but the warfare seems pretty conventional.

Oh well, I guess the books would explain away most of this stuff, like the Interdictor-class starships you mentioned.
