I have been trying to remember a book, possibly part of a series. The story is set in a 'dream world', believed to be maintained by 'sleepers' or 'dreamers', of which I think there are seven. They may be mentioned in the title. There is a prophecy or myth about what happens if the dreamers wake, I think.
The people in the book are affected by the dreams of these sleepers, I remember the appearance of the guards outside the palace changes, though they remain the same 'person'.
The main character is an agent of the royals, I think, the remarkable thing is that he is the only one whose appearance remains unchanged. At one stage he uses a 'flying dream' to travel rapidly.
He finds out that one of the sleepers looks exactly like him (is him?) which is why his appearance is constant. I think he finds the sleeper in a cave and the dreamers are giants.
It must be getting on for a decade ago I read this so probably written in the last 15 years. I hope someone can help, it is beginning to bug me that I can't recall this.
