(Probably Found) I can't remember the name of this book!

So this is a Fiction/Fantasy novel by a male author. The part I remember is I think at the beginning of the book a girl is in the bookstore and she's running from something and then I remember her going to another world and she has to go on a quest to open a portal or something so she can go back home and it has something to do with her grandmother coming to this world and having something to do with it before she went there. I think I remember her having like a weird little pet.. and maybe a unicorn or a crystal ball of some sort? I really don't remember this was a long time ago :x
