Dying of the Light

It's pretty good. The first half is a bit slow, but then it catches fire and becomes more interesting. You can also find some prototypes of characters in ASoIaF (particularly a guy who is clearly the inspiration for the Hound later on).
 
It's alright. It's definitely slow and the ending isn't that great but it's a way better first novel than many other authors have done. Fevre Dream is better.
 
I own a copy; I've been blocked at halfway (or so) for about three years now. I really must concentrate and try and finish it.
