Just reread The Mystery Knight for the fourth time, I think. And I have a few thoughts.
First, the story details more of the Blackfyre rebellion and Bloodraven’s part in it. *******, born, not base born. A sorcerer. He is the kings hand and he dispenses the king’s justice at the end.
How many eyes does blood Raven have? A thousand and one. Ser Maynard Plumm is obviously one of these eyes. Duncan thinks he’s a gossip, but he’s the one who has the best assessment of what is actually happening. I think he’s the only character who’s brooch is described other than Lord Rivers himself. Plums brooch is a moon stone. Rivers’ is an iron hand. When Duncan escapes the trap at the well, he meets Plumm who binds up his wound and sends him off to the sept. During this time, Plumm’s features seem ill defined or slightly fluid to Dunk. This can be ascribed to Dunk’s injur or to the fact that it may be Rivers using a glamour to appear as Plumm in the moonstone brooch. In fact, when Dunk first sees him, he thinks he only has one pale eye. A thousand eyes and one.
When Plumm is introduced, he is sitting among the stumps of Weirwoods. The white stumps and white roots surround him. And he soon comments that maybe they are all bastards of a Targaryen King.
Secondly, Walder Frey is introduced as a four year old boy. And he is associated with a hastily concluded marriage contract and a travesty of a wedding.
Third, there is a lot of talk about the dreams of these descendants of Valyria. Dunk already encountered one prince with this gift of true dreams. He now encounters another. Duncan is prophesied to gain a white cloak. He thinks this is unlikely and compares it to a great many other unlikely things. A white cloak for Glendon Ball. His being born of royalty.
The fiddler has other dreams as well. The most prominent of these is a dragon being born at Whitewalls. At the end of the story, Lord Rivers says this actually indicated Egg. Lord Rivers states his intent to raze Whitewalls. So how can the dream come true if the Casler has been destroyed?
Up on the roof, the Fiddler tells Dunk that the castle looks like snow. I think it is easy to compare the names, Whitewalls and Winterfell. Whitewalls in the moonlight may look very much like Winterfelll in snow. This points back to the theory of adragon rising from Winterfell.
Lastly, Dunk and Egg are very similar to Brienne and Pod.
