Anyone read him yet? I got The Alienist and The Angel of Darkness at a seconhand shop. Any good? What style and type of stories does he write?

I read The Aliensit ages ago. I have a horrible memory so I can't tell you too much, but I did like it, i kept the book, bought 2 more by the same author that I've yet to read.....I think it had a kind of gritty Sherlock Holmes vibe. An alienist is a psychological profiler I think...from the 20's.

And a bit earlier as the book is set around the turn of the twentieth century if I remember right. I also liked The Alienist a lot, Angel of Darkness less so but still decent. Famous characters, extravagant meals at historic NYC restaurants and a generally excellent picture of that city from another time.

The Alienist is set in turn of the century New York City. It even involves Theodore Roosevelt as a character. A good tale involving a fair degree of suspense. Interesting, if somewhat two-dimensional characters.

I haven't read the sequel, The Angel of Darkness.

However, I have read The Italian Secretary. It's a Sherlock Holmes story with a Doyle-esque plot but not much in the way of ACD panache. Okay, but not a "must read".
