I'm trying to recall an alternate universe short story that I read in the late '80s/early '90s (but could have been published before then).
As I recall, the primary setting was a bar (perhaps in Florida); the protagonist is required to travel to alternate versions of the bar, at some point being joined by a woman (perhaps an alternate version of himself, perhaps trying to kill all other versions of him?). I believe the reason for his travels was another dimension jumper (perhaps also another version of himself?). But I remember it mostly due to the fact that in one of the worlds, the bar is found to be abandoned and boarded up, and there is something (never seen or identified) lurking outside, which they just barely avoid by jumping to another world.
