After posting on page one of Varys: What's his motivation?, I got to thinking of Littlefinger. We have not seen him since the Alayne chapters of AFFC. Outside of those chapters, the only thing we know of his actions and schemes is that he requested a few tapestries from the Red Keep. His troops were the closest to Dragonstone, yet he did not assist in that fight. The Lannisters had to bring the Tyrells all the way from Oldtown and the Arbor. Nor has Littlefinger moved to pacify the Riverlands... he's left the subjugation of the Riverlords and the removal of the bandits to the Lannisters.
The only thing that the Lannisters know of Baelish is that he has kept the Valelords in line and that he's requested those tapestries from Robert's storerooms.
We know that Robert refurbished the Red Keep after his coronation. He took down all the Targaryen furnishings and redecorated in antlers and animal skins. But he seemingly did not destroy all the old Targaryen decor. If these tapestries are of Targaryen family history, why does Baelish want them? Maybe it will prove his Targaryen ancestry... especially the legitimacy that Aegon IV proclaimed... so that Baelish may claim the throne.
Yes, I know... is Baelish descended from Baelor the Blessed (renowned for his chastity), Baelor Breakspear (the Black Prince of Westeros), or Aegon IV the Unworthy? I dunno... this theory is not yet perfected.
