Two orphans, A girl and a blind boy, scavenge for electronics

Many years ago (~5), I read a really good science-fiction book, which I can't remember the title of. Two of the main characters were a pair of orphans living on the street, a girl and a boy. The boy is blind, but has super-naturally good hearing (At one point, he points out to a lady having trouble openning her car that she's using a different key-fob than when she closed it). They substain themselves by scavenging the dumps for electronics (in one example a fridge), fixing them, and selling them (the blind boy locates them by listening for electric "hums" or something like that). They're terrified of being caught, because they'd be put to work in an assembly line, soldering the same component over and over again.

That is all in the early parts of the book. Later on, some people use the boy's hearing ability to decipher something from some wire-tapped conversations, and it turns out he can also determine the number dialed from the telephone tone. Also, when the pair get new clothes, the boy asks if the clothes are yellow. A person asks him "what does it matter, you don't know what yellow looks like" or something like that. The boy counters "But I dont want to go around looking like a banana".

That's about all I remember about the book, and it's been bugging me on and off for months. Thanks!
