Hi ,

I am looking for name/author of a fantasy book series from 1980's . The first book may have been written in the 1970's but I doubt it .

The series has its focus on a boy/man . The series has a focus on a civil war based on religion/power . In the beginning of the first book , the religion without power was in charge . But , there was a boy to whom those with power had their minds . The power may have been hereditary . The boy does not receive his powers until the end of the first book where he fights with a queen/witch in a cathedral or hall . When the boy stands on a square or middle of an insignia , he obtains the power and defeats the queen/witch .

Later books have him on campaigns to keep his kingdom together . He marries a woodnymph/woodsprite out of duty to obtain offspring . He eventually loves her .

Those that know the series may have had the answer from the start . I figured that I would add as much as possible .

thank you , in advance

Thank you , for the attempt .

I went through the web one more time . I finally found it . The series began in 1970 - I only started reading the series in the late 80's .

It was Katherine Kurtz's Deryni books .

Thanks , again .

Good Lord, so it is. I loved those books -- should have recognised your description. Glad you uncovered their identity.

Yep . I don't even think that I read them all . I found out that a new one was writen in 20 . I will have to start over . :)

From your description they should quite interesting. I think I shall look them up :)

The one part of the description with respect to the "wood nymph" wife ... that was actually from the Belgariad which they actually called a "dryad" . I somehow mixed the two heros . Well , it was almost twenty years ago and I read both series in a three to five year time frame .

Well, that tells me how long it's been since I read those, because I didn't even recognise the description!
