Came across this just yesterday. Initial thoughts are basically 'no, no, no, no, NO!'

Johnny Depp to Play Doctor Who on the Big Screen?

If this rumour turns out to have any element of truth to it, bar the fact that we'd like to see Who on the big screen, I think that RTD should be thrown into the Eye of Harmony.
The whole thing sounds like a shoddy made-up piece of drivel and the fact that the original article referenced has 'disappeared' makes me highly suspicious that it is indeed some kind of prank. Hopefully.

Yeah, I think we can relax. The Keith Richards Who Menace may be no more than a terrible hoax. On the other hand, if they insist on an American (lots of planets have Americans :D) ....

Is Tim Burton directing? And is the Assistant played by Helena Bonham Carter?

While this is undoubtedly a hoax, I have to ask why not? I think the Peter Cushing films stand the test of time, and the plot of those was just a reworking of TV series episodes.

I'm not sure Johnny Depp is the right actor, but I don't think I have ever initially liked any actor who has played Doctor Who. Almost all of them grew on me eventually (some took longer than others.)

The biggest problem for me would be fitting it into the Doctor's personal timeline. Unless, of course, they want to shoe-horn him in before CE, either before or after PMcG. I would have thought that with a suitable script, JD would be intriguing as the Doctor. And that's the downfall: a suitable script for a movie is effectively the same length as a double-episode (just with the slightly different structure required for the different format). Is that really enough of a story to establish a "new" Doctor?

Johnny Depp is so versatile, I can see him in the role. But if it cost the Doctor a regeneration for the sake of one little movie ... I would be more than a little miffed about that.

If Johnny Depp was in a Doctor Who movie, I'd watch it. Anyone else, probably not. I'm sure I'm not the only one. So there's that. Looks like it was never going to happen anyway, but just sayin'...

What a Deppressing thought...

IMHO, no film of the Doctor has really worked, because they don't have the current TV actor playing the role. Pete Cushing was brought in because they wanted a big-name star, Paul McGann...well, I've no idea why he was used, as he'd no idea of what the Doctor means, and Depp's just wrong, somehow.

They could make it something unconnected to the TV show, in the same way that the Peter Cushing Dr Who films aren't meant to be canonical.

Depp seems a fairly lazy casting choice, in a way he's an obvious suggestion since the Doctor tends to be quite a quirky character and Depp's roles tend to be quirky a lot. There could be worse choices, but I think they could probably do better as well.

Perhaps the person offering him the rôle had seen his UK TV work, so was able to say: "Suits you."

Would you let a painter/decorator touch up a Picasso?

A Doctor Who film is simply a bad idea. Hollywood's track record on this sort of thing is abysmal and I have no reason to believe that things will be any different.

The best thing Hollywood can do is to leave it alone.

Incidentally, no-one's commented on the tidbit mentioned in some of the similar coverage, e.g. in The Sun, that the script is being developed by one Mr RTD...

This is what I've heard on IMDB.

Vin Diesel as the Doctor
Sylvester Stallone as the Master
Bruce Willis as the head of UNIT
Tom Cruise as Captain Jack Harkness
Megan Fox as a Harvard professor of astrophysics sidekick

The whole thing will be rebased in America.

Can't wait; should be smoking.

I dread the idea of RTD being involved, but have subtly suspected that Eccleston might come back for a feature about the Time Wars, which I believe would make a good excuse for a feature. Of course it needn't be Eccleston, but unless they ask McGann back to redeem himself, we could otherwise end up with an un-catalogued incarnation.

Of course, the precedent for a different actor playing the same incarnation has already been set with Cushing and in the Bond series, of course.

Yep. Sounds like that could be RTD's wish-list, all right - although, how many boxes would Tom Cruise need to stand on to kiss Vin Diesel?:D

LOL
I can just see it now.

The Master: (mumble) it's too late Doc (mumble mumble)

The Doctor: No! I'll tell you when it's too ******* late you twisted ************! I'm taking out the goddam trash!

Astrophysics Sidekick: EEEEEK! (clothes fall off).

:)

Indeed!

Just think of all those 3-D astrophysics diagrams and models....

It's going to be directed by Paul WS Anderson (Alien V Predator).

Foxbat,

I understand the script needs retooling, I think you've got the tone dead on. Very funny. "DON'T PUSH ME" The Master said.

Interference,

They're going to get Vin to stand in a hole for the love scenes.

...and the TARDIS will turn out to be a Transformer, you spotted the Franchise crossover.

Christopher Ecclestone is already suing his agent for even suggesting he appear in Dr Who and the Transformers: Saviours of Time and Space (working title, the studio is open to suggestions).
