They were good movies because they were full of great moments. Luke was pulled into the adventure and there was danger that lurked as a growing threat. It became a battle leading Luke to a destiny while testing his faith and reason. The story moved forward by perspective, with some incident or mission that took place, that reached out until it met resistance.

Old Ben Kenobi became a Jedi master, but he trusted the force and died, becoming Luke's guardian during moments, until Yoda. Leia knew more than she needed and it angered her to have to lead things since she was a Princess, she was important, someone special, and therefore slightly antagonistic to the situation.

I used to have bed sheets that looked like that first photo, when I was a kid. I also had the lunch pail and the Star Wars figures.

Actually what I also used to have was some kind of device that you placed a round disc into and than you looked into the device, pulled a lever and it changed slides. There was one for Dracula that reminds me of the movie Bram Stoker's Dracula because it was very rich in either Gothic, a hybrid Oriental, or Queen Anne Victorian design. On the other hand, Star Wars was rich in creating a sense of understanding through feeling connected. You could experience hope and other preserved intangibles that the world mythologies hold in something like a Pandora's Box. Not all movies have this courage.

I remember those! They looked almost like orange/red binoculars, or something, right? They were super cool. I can't remember what they were called, and I don't know if anyone makes them anymore.

This brings back great memories from the 80's

For me, the first three original STAR WARS had a special kind of magical draw to them, you felt a connection with the characters and you wanted to see more every time you looked at the movies. The merchandising drew us all in and almost everyone wanted something tangible that would connect us with the films, anything and everything from t-shirts to toys.

Many others were inspired to make movies, write stories and even compose music to fuel the internal interest we all shared by the amazing space fantasy that took us far far away. It was then I realized, the world is full of dreamers who all hope for a better tomorrow. :)

C of K: I had a red binocular device and another one as well. Yes it sounds like the same.

Starbeast: It seems to me that Star Wars was popular so naturally there was a demand for those items. In addition there were several more films that ventured into space at about that time such as E.T., Star Trek, Alien, and The Black Hole, to name some. Yeah, those were all good movies. The fascination for space exploration, the future, was presided over by that reassurance than in view, until it turned into something else like Pandora.

VIEWMASTER

Not sure if they still make them, but there are loads for sale on eBay. They were great.

Talking about binoculars, I saw on the second image that the stormtroopers using binoculars had different hemlets. Then I realised just how appalling normal stormtrooper helmets would be for vision, with the eyes so far apart. No wonder they couldn't hit anything! It must be one of the most stupid designs ever. I'm amazed the actors weren't crashing into each other.

Ah, the viewmaster. Thanks, Harebrain.
trying to figure out what they were called
might have eaten at me for years.

That's a cool pic of Ben and the gang, Starbeast.

I admit, I like both trilogys for different reasons. But I will admit that Star Wars was a very groundbreaking piece of cinema and probably without it we wouldn't have a lot of the hi-tech stuff we have in the movies now.

I missed the boat for Star Wars as I was quite young when the 'new' ones came out and at that time thought 'eew, Star Wars is for boys and it's boooring' then a few years back I went 'huh, let's give this movie a try' and then fell in love with them. I decided to start with the old ones and they drew me in. And nothing can beat Han Solo. He's one of my all time favourite movie characters.

I'm not sure if it's online but I remember finding on the special edition of the Original Trilogy bonus disk there's some absoutley hillarious outtakes from the original movies.

Well, no one could fault you for being young when Epies 1,2,&3 came out. I was only about 375 days old when The Empire Strikes Back came out in theaters. My dad made me into a fan by telling me that he was my father, and that he was also Darth Vader. He was nearly as scary back then too.

I wonder if most people were aware that Vader was a man before his ground shaking revelation, or if they thought he was a killer droid with a cape and saber. The breathing could have given him away, but I'm not certain if that would have been enough back in 1977.

Of course George Lucas could have confirmed that Vader was indeed a man in some obscure interview long before The Empire Strikes Back came out.

I had Star Wars bedcovers and window curtains, not to mention a ton of toys.

The original trilogy will always rank among my favorite movies. As Starbeast said, they had a special kind of magic.

I still have Star Wars bed covers, and i'm 26...
