I hope the good people in this forum can help me identify a fantasy book series I've lost in memory. I believe it was published in the 1980s - at least that's when I read and collected the paperback books. The gist of the series had the hero (male) complete a gamut of labors (like Hercules). The main character was humanoid but not human, perhaps more of an anti-hero. He was pictured on the cover as tall, strong, with sword, dark-skinned with lidless eyes; perhaps riding a horse or horse-like creature.

This was a five-book series. Despite my inability to remember the specifics, I am sure I have pleasant memories from the stories. I would very much like to read them again. Do you know the title, perhaps? Any suggestions on where I can look? I appreciate your help.

Was the protagonist very large, with glowing red eyes? Perhaps he rode a giant cat?
If not, did he have a huge Horned Helmet?

Yes, yes, yes, ashewyntr. The protagonist was a large humanoid with distinctive eyes; glowing red sounds about right. And yes, the steed was a cat (kind of a weird choice now that I think about it). And the headdress was horned, more Samurai than Viking. I think you're on to something; can you point me in the right direction? Thank you.

The Lords of Dus by Lawrence Watt Evans? It's all 4 books collected in one volume.
It is the story of Garth, the Overman, who seeks to be remembered forever. I remember he ends up with a demonic magic sword, and ends up facing evil gods. He rode a huge warcat.

Yes, ashewyntr. That's it: The Lords of Dus by Lawrence Watt-Evans. I looked up the books on Amazon and smiled when I saw the cover art. Thanks so much for putting my memory at ease on this one.
