... who wrote good, 'straight' SFF: femal as far as we can remember. The, she started to write books influenced by Russian Folk Tales.

Please help, we've been stuck on this for days and just can't remember who it is we're thinking of! Did one of the books have a title starting with 'Ras'?

Finally got there - Cherryh. I can understand why it was so hard to find who was responsible!

Ah, you found it... I was about to suggest Cherryh -- her Rusalka trilogy from the late 80s early 90s -- then I read the end of your post.

I'm also going to move this to 'Book Search', the section of the forums deliberately established for this sort of query (even though you've solved the issue yourself).
 
Mercedes Lackey has also written a number of books that add a slightly different 'twist' to fairy/folk tales. One does go into some Russian tales-- including a brief encounter with Baba Yaga.
