(Found) Book I read sometime between 1980 - 1984

Hi there. I was hoping someone could help me locate a book I read as a kid in high school. I'm not sure how old it was when I read it.

It was about a prince who was banished or expelled from his rightful place as heir, (he escaped?) and travelled his world and learned about each of the peoples: some could bend time, some were very small or large, some could regrow limbs, stuff like this. In the end he returns to regain the throne as a compassionate, skilled and wiser leader.

Any help would be appreciated.

This sounds much like Treason, by Orson Scott Card, but that's not how it ends. There was another search recently for this one, but I couldn't find the thread.
