book about farmer joining a gang, help?

I read a book years ago and now I can not remember the name or author. It's about a farm boy leaving home to go to the city, He gets picked up by a truck and when he gets there gangs are recruiting. He joins the purples I think and falls in love with a girl. The book ends with them on a spaceship where her guardian angel has killed everyone? Please help me find this book, thank you.
 
A Plague of Angels, Sherri S Tepper. She's just published a sequel called Waters Rising
