I have been trying to find a book I read years back but I can not remember the name, title or author! (I recalled it being hertraft or something similar, but my searches have found nothing. So if anyone can recognise this plot please tell me the details.
Can only give a very basic plot probably with holes in;
a troop of elite woodland specialists (veterans with main character, a ranger and an (light) elf) is scouting an area, they come across tracks of another troop. The enemy troop is more regimental and strict (less woodland skills). Both troops spot and attack an outpost, its already been ambushed. The woodland troops realise its a trap set for them by the dark elves, forcing both troops to work together and hold a truce until they have avoided these elves. The rest of the plot is about the two 'enemies' slowly gaining respect and then friendship from one another as they avoid the dark elves.
Within this plot, the light elf is the brother of the leader of the dark elves. and the light elf left his brother and his love to turn to the light (by hearing song I think). In the climactic battle the dark elf kills his light elf brother only to find the light elf let him win on purpose thus defeating the dark elf who's head is then chopped off my the main character!
Also they pick up a monk on the way, who turns out to be the killer of the main characters family. he tags along for a long time and ends up escaping to the dark elves, killing some of the troops along the way.
Thats the jist of it, forgive the very sub-par plot but I read this about 7 years ago. Any help would be great.
