This was a short story in a collection - quite old. Might be by Fred Pohl, really not sure.
It was about a kitten called Sputnik and how Sputnik had figured out that when he grew old enough he would turn into a human. Anyway, there was something wrong with a child in the story - she tried to attack her baby brother in the night, Sputnik stopped her somehow and took the blame and whatever was wrong with her, she snapped out of it, and Sputnik forgot he was ever a super kitten and turned into a normal cat.
Something like that anyway!
(Hi, I'm new by the way )
Additional Info: I have a feeling it may have been in an anthology called "New writings in SF" ed John Carnell - of which there were a whole series published 1960s/70s.
