After a bit of sniffing around, I think I may have an explanation for the "chanel": Mr Reynolds was obviously confusing Chanel No.5 with Fireball XL5 when he wrote the story.
Here's another previously unpublished story by Alastair Reynolds: "Closing Contact." I haven't read it yet, but thought folks might be interested. I understand it's a bit more advanced than the one in Larry's link, being written in 1985 and actually being submitted to (though rejected by) Interzone. (First submission!)
