I will be going to this'n to try to flog some books! Didn't know Joe Abercrombie was going to be there until I had a look on the website. Might have to buy one of his books now! Heard good things about him on here.

Wish you well on selling your books, Mouse! I'm sure you will have a great time :)

Our Joe will be there too? He's a marvellous writer and I have read all of his books so far - brilliant :)

That sounds cruel. And people won't buy bruised books.:)

So far, he's had four books published, three of them in the First Law trilogy (which I've read and very much enjoyed) and a "standalone", Best Served Cold, set in the same universe (which is currently near the top of my To Be Read pile). As I've yet to read Best Served Cold, I can't say whether it contains spoilers for the First Law trilogy.

Cheers, Rosie!

Yeah I was thinking of Best Served Cold. I'm not keen on series or trilogies any more! I blame J.V. Jones. ;)

As I understand it Best Served Cold follows on from The First Law and, though it is a stand alone, some of the characters from TFL do, apparently, appear in it. So you might be left doing some head scratching if you just go for BSC.

I'm not sure, but I suspect he might wish that you buy all four books (not to mention ordering the new one due out in 2011).

Whether he'd say this, who knows...?

So the con was yesterday! Lots of panels and talks and whatnot, but not all that many people there... which meant that everybody was off watching the talks and not wandering around the dealers room. So I abandoned my table and went and watched Joe Abercrombie.

Very funny, very handsome man! I tried to remember some of what he said for the JA fans...

He never submitted to a publisher, just tried agents. Got seven rejections before he was accepted. He's obsessed with word count, he said, and edits as he goes so he writes a sentence, deletes it, write all the numbers down of what he's added and what he's taken away! He said he's trying to write without editing so that he can get everything down and then go back at the end and do all the editing stuff as it's much more efficient.

He also said he'll go through an edit a character at a time, so that the character's voice is consistent.

Sadly had other plans I had made before - and reminded about closer to the date - that meant I couldn't make it. But I'll keep my eyes open for future Brizzle stuff :)

If you do get to read one of his books, you'll notice that he writes the different POVs in different ways. If I recall correctly, Glokta's POV had a lot of italicised text indicating in-the-moment thought (even though a lot of the POV's roman text consisted of Glokta's musings), more than the other POVs. Apart from anything else, it reinforced Glokta's internalising of the world around him, as would befit an interrogator who knows how to keep his mouth shut (and why he has to keep it shut).

I'm putting Best Served Cold on my Christmas list. Almost bought it at the con, but the woman running the table looked grumpy!

Have to say, Mouse, I think Best Served Cold is Joe's weakest offering to date (sorry, Joe!). Still good, with many excellent elements, but a little more, ehm... padded than the First Law Trilogy IMHO.
