It's an ex-library children's book that I used to own and, I thought, still had. As far as I can remember the cover definitely had an hourglass on and possibly a skull in one of the bulbs (shadowy). It was a dark background and, I think, the title was glittery.
The story revolved around a teenage girl whose father was given a posting (possibly command) on a scientific spaceship. The mission was to orbit very fast - possibly faster than light - in order to jump time and land on Earth 200 or so years after they left. The girl resented leaving her friends and her boyfriend but had to go. She sulked a lot but - I think - made friends with one of the female scientists.
Their ship gets boarded by aliens and her father gets killed. Something goes wrong with the engine - possibly something to do with crystals? - and she gets flung forward in time and has to watch Earth get attacked, irradiated and then lie barren for thousands of years. At some point she visits Earth and thinks about the boyfriend she left behind.
Much of the book is taken up with a journey she makes to the end of the Universe, jumping through time and trying to stop the events occurring. I think she meets her past self at least once and is extremely old by the time the book ends - possibly stuck going through the Universe forever.
I'd appreciate any help people can offer - google is returning nothing and I'd love to know what the book was!
Thank you
