I can't seem to recall the name of a book or book series or the main character.
It was a pre WWII British officer who had lost a brother in a southern hemisphere jungle, and went to go look for him. Along the way he meets with his former Sargent, while being nearly tricked into losing his money by what seems to be a pair of brother and sister missionaries.
Later he meets up with a woman that looks exactly like his current fiance, but is from the future, Her name is User Annie or Ann, I think. At one point she uses a sub dermal field generator that repels insects. She also knows who he is because her family line is based around the mothers don't get married, because her ancestor never married the main character.
And there is a chapter when the main character is in what appears to be a WWII Japanese air field and the main character has to cross it to get closer to his goal. The whole area that the main story takes place in is some weird time vortex controlled by a large black tower.
I read the first book during the year of 1998, I believe. I'd be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.
(Gah right at my wits end, I found the book [SIZE=+3]Philip José Farmer's The Dungeon)
