Years ago, I'm talking YEARS ago, like maybe thirty years ago in a time and place far far away ....
I read this book about this guy, a military leader type, who was constantly being plotted against by this other more weaselly government type guy who had a sinister name.
I seem to remember that the good guy, tall handsome guy, maybe blonde haired if I remember, was set-up by the government guy and sent to prison where the government guy hoped he would be tortured to death by this female torturer who had a wicked reputation for doing bad things to people.
The government guy always seemed to delight in the possibilities with each new plot, but the good guy, a very serious guy, was always one step ahead of him.
The female torturer ends up falling for the good guy and becoming an ally of his .... and very protective of the good guy in the process. I remember the woman being particularly good with some kind of futuristic bull whip and she was able to skin people alive with it ... according to the government guy's description anyway.
There were a series of books about the adventures of the good guy, he was on a mission to build a space ship of some sort ... he would disappear for awhile and then, to the disdain of the government guy, he would always return.
I remember maybe getting two or three deep into them, the books, then my kids were born and well, you know the rest of the story. Life got in the way of my reading.
Does that very basic character sketch ring a bell for anyone along with that very vague plot-line?
