I once read a book in the mid 80's about a village on a river. There was a demon/dragon in hybernation in a swampy wooded area until 2 young boys woke it up. The dragon/demond flew to the village and ate people. I thought it was called blood wings but I was mistaken. The cover was red and black, and I think it had a dragon on the front. I think there was something about a deal with this creature to not attack the village. I also remember the boys getting in a canue and go down the river where they found the creature. Does anyone have any idea what this book may be called. I have searched and search and would know the book by its cover emediately. Please help, this is the only book I have ever enjoyed reading and want to read it again. This book might wake up my desire to read other books.

Ahh, poor OP, the solution was right there the whole time! Hopefully, roopammie realized this but the title is actually Blood Wings by Stephen Gresham (1990) and is exactly as described.

I'll mark as probably found, but it seems weird that the OP discounted the actual title. I wonder why?
