It's the same old story. I read a Sci-fi book many years ago and cannot recall its name or author. To be honest I can barely recall the plot. But I am hoping someone on here can help even with the few scraps I can dig out of my ancient memory.
The main part of the tale involved the central character sitting in a London Underground (Tube) train repeatedly and imagining a ship's brass binacle or compass in his head. The description mentioned the smell of warm oil from the polished binacle. As he pictured it he saw the compass card swing to point in different directions and when he opened his eyes he was transported to a new location and new adventures.
Any clues folks?
Thanks and Merry Christmas for 2010 and a Happy New Year for 2011
