YA escaping a dying earth via suspended animation

Read this in the '80s, I believe. The setting an ecologically dying Earth. I remember the main characters being young, maybe teenagers. They are traveling to meet up with the rest of their group to escape the dying planet. In the end, it is revealed that the escape is really via a form of suspended animation, and the group is seated in a chamber made up to resemble an airliner prior to being placed in suspended animation.

Any clues?
 
I don't think this is it, but it shares some elements with the (admittedly C-) movie Millenium.
 
And persistence pays off. The answer is "The Missing Persons League, by Frank Bonham."
