Fantasy novels with nobility/Rulers wearing gold masks

I don't remember a lot of the plot, but it involved a world where the
rulers/nobility all wore golden masks of some kind. I believe the main
character was not originally part of this group but for some reason was
taken to join them. I think the cover had two or three people wearing
these masks standing on a boat.

I read this book seven or eight years ago and I believe that there are two
or three books in the series at that time.

I've actually found the book. It's called "The Chosen" by Ricardo Pinto and is the first book of The Stone Dance of the Chameleon series.
